Teamwork key

Holy Cross Collegiate Junior Varsity girls volleyball coach Deanna Sample is hoping that her team use toughness and teamwork to get them wins this season.
Some of the players are rugby players and she is hoping that toughness combined with size will see results for this young team.
“For our high school girls, it’s a JV team, so it’s primarily Grade 10s with a couple of 11s. A large majority of the team played with me last year on the Junior A team, so in terms of cohesiveness we should be able to take off of where we left off last year,” said Sample.
There are some new additions to the team but they still will be a young team that will have to work together to combine their skills.
“We have some new additions, it’s should be good. A big focus for us right now is ball handling skills, shooting skills,” said Sample.
“We’ve got a lot of strong athletes and just owning those skills and refining them, and team work is huge thing for us as well.”
Sample’s expectations is that the bar will be set higher this year for the girls performance on the court as they will be one of the smaller teams.
“The level of play is going to have to be raised from last year and because we’re in high school now, so we’re expecting to see stronger, larger teams. One of the largest challenges will be our size because we’re not as tall and strong compared to what other high school teams will look like,” said Sample.
The strength for this young team will be speed, as it will make up for the lack of size in games.
“We have six Grade 10s, two Grade 11s and have two Grade 12s. They won’t play in league games but will come to tournaments. They bring a lot of leadership to the team and just having them around is nice,” said Sample.
