Men out for curling bonspiel

It was a busy week at the Strathmore Curling Club as 34 men’s teams took to the ice in the annual bonspiel March 15 to 21.

The modified three-event bonspiel guarantees teams at least three games and is something the club looks forward to every year.

“We count on this bonspiel as far as a board and a club goes,” said Darcy Ledene, organizer. “It brings some good dollars into the club and into the town.”

With 34 teams it makes for a busy week, but is good to see, said Ledene, especially as other clubs have seen numbers dip.

“It’s very busy, but a good, fun, energetic week,” he said.

Finals were played March 21 with approximately 56 prizes being handed out including barbecue’s, televisions, patio sets and power tools.

During the finals, the club had a traditional bag piper pipe in the teams, just as you would see on the Brier.

“It’s just an added bonus for the teams that make the finals,” said Ledene. “From guys that have played they say it gives them goose bumps just to hear the piper start playing and doing the march out there.”

A banquet was held on March 20, where each team was able to cook their steaks outside on the barbeque.

They also did their $1,000 reserve draw at the banquet.
