Art Show comes to Library

A moving art exhibit has come to the Strathmore Municipal Library. “The Home Show” is a collection of artwork from members of the Alberta Society of Artists and artists at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.

“We’ve had the exhibit going since I’ve started here in September and we get nothing but positive comments from people of how wonderful it is to have artists displaying their work,” said Jesse Traquair, manager at the Strathmore Library.

The exhibits show the artists depictions of home, life in a home and objects that signify home to them, whether it be a single façade, a childhood home or objects or things that signify a home such as animals, fresh flowers or a comfy chair.

The Art Gallery of Alberta has developed the touring exhibition for the Alberta Foundation of the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program.

It is currently traveling through the southwest and central part of Alberta.

The Nina Haggerty Center for the Arts provides a supportive, non-competitive environment in which people with developmental disabilities can grow and learn within their community.

“I like to think the library can be a cultural hub for a community,” said Traquair. “If it’s this nexus where literature and art can meet then that’s a really good thing in my mind.”

Traquair said he thinks it’s fabulous that “The Home Show” exhibit has come to Strathmore because some of the pieces are quite interesting.

He said the idea of the traveling exhibit is to get art into rural parts of Alberta so people can enjoy art without having to go to Edmonton or Calgary.

“People in general have a desire to see art. It’s one of those universal things that everyone likes,” said Traquair. “They may not like a particular medium, but I think that people in general just really like it and I think people like having it brought here.”
