The Cheadle Lions club hosted their first annual Feed-a-Steer auction at the Cheadle Community Hall on May 2.
The day consisted of a BBQ, a cheque presentation to the three heaviest steers and a live, online auction of the animals.
The event signaled the end of an agricultural fundraiser that saw 20 elite local cattle producers each give a steer to the auction at Cattlelands Feedyards in October 2014. The animals were weighed at the beginning of the fundraiser and then again at the end of it. The winning steer weighed in at about 1,515 lbs and belonged to Bruce and Heather Clayton who took home the winning cheque for $2,700.
While all the figures have not been added up yet, it is expected that along with the auction money and other donations they will have a profit of $60,000.
The money that was raised will go to the building of a much-needed hospice in the Strathmore area so that people who need the care will not have to leave their communities.
The event was so successful that there will be another auction next year.
“It was so successful and everyone liked it,” says Cheadle Lions secretary Marlene Risdon. “We will be doing it again next year, and it will probably be bigger.”
