The Strathmore Community Football Association unveiled their new name as the Badgers beginning this fall.
After a couple of months of debating, the board decided that the name would fit best the team identities.
“What happened is the high school informed us that they were going to start their own senior football team and we could not carry the name Spartans anymore,” said Brad Middlemiss, head coach of the association’s senior team. “We’ve been talking for quite awhile about changing that name because a lot of people got confused about that we were a high school football team and we never were.
“Coming up with a new name was quite challenging, all the good names are taken by other sports teams. We tried to come up with Lightning or Thunder or something like that but we find out there is a girls softball team after you search it out.”
The name Badgers was settled on because of the resemblance to the Strathmore area.
“We ended up with the Badgers because there are a lot of them around the Strathmore area, so we wanted something that would belong to the town,” said Middlemiss.
The community football association owns all the equipment and will possibly have the badger claw emblem put on the helmets in time for next season.
“We own all the equipment and the stuff on the field plus the sheds where the equipment was locked in as well, so it’s been a bit of a battle,” said Middlemiss. “The logo that you see on our Facebook page, that’s going to be the logo that ‘s going to be embroidered into our clothing and then we’re talking about some claws that are clawing through fabric on the sides of the helmets.”
