Inline hockey registration deadline inching closer

Another Wheatland Inline Hockey season is around the corner and now that hockey season is complete, there are more players pouring in.
“I noticed in March that we got quite a few in and then it tapered off. In the end of March, first week of April, calls are coming in right, left and centre, so it’s starting to pick up again,” said President Lynne Kozma. “I would like to hit around the 100 mark for players and to make it fun.”
There are still some spots to fill on some teams and Kozma is hopeful that more players will register for them.
“I really need U18 and U8 players. In the U18’s I’m low, probably down 10 players, now it’s getting tough with people getting jobs now,” said Kozma.
She feels that this year, having an open registration is what made it a slower process with players
“I keep my registration open because I don’t want to ever say, ‘you can’t play.’ That’s where maybe I have to change it and have a final date,” said Kozma.
She said that this year there has been a great interest from surrounding communities.
“There are a few new ones coming from Langdon and Chestermere. I guess there will be 20 or so new players,” said Kozma.
Finding jersey sponsorship has proved to be no easy feat this year.
“I sometimes think that I should charge more so I can buy more jerseys, my husband is pounding the pavement looking for some sponsors for jerseys, but it’s all learning and growing,” said Kozma.
The season will begin May 4 with the registration deadline set for April 24.
