Strathmore’s Sarah Lecavalier has had an impressive hockey resume this far with her success at the Canada Winter Games and the U18 levels recently.
She was fortunate enough to get recognized and earned a spot with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux starting in the 2016-2017 season.
“It’s definitely a huge weight off my shoulders. I wanted to be committed before the Canada Games, but I had to focus on that tournament for a bit,” said Lecavalier
“All the work I have put in so far has led me to such a great opportunity to put me further in hockey and just an awesome feeling.”
She admits that it was an indescribable feeling going to a top-notch hockey program.
“North Dakota has put some great hockey players on (the ice),” she said. “I’m really excited to be a part of that family and alumni and I know if I put in the work, then that school will be behind me the rest of my career.”
Lecavalier was initially contacted several times over the course of the season and felt strongly about her decision.
“Everyone says there’s a feeling you get when you go to university and you visit it,” Lecavallier said. “I got that feeling. It was something that is special and you know it’s where you want to be for four years.”
The feedback about the program has been nothing but positive.
“The hockey team is amazing, their facilities are top notch and the coaching staff is incredible. It was the best fit for me and I’m really happy with my decision,” said Lecavalier.
The coaches have given her some expectations if she is to play in every game.
“We’ve talked a little bit, obviously I’ve got to earn my ice, but I’m going to be an aggressive forward that can get the puck in the corners and also put the puck in the net,” said Lecavalier.
The Fighting Sioux have a certain way of inserting players into their line up.
“North Dakota does it in a specific way, they plan out how many freshmen they’ll have and seniors leaving. It should be a bit of a new team when I go,” said Lecavalier.
She plans on enrolling in dentistry once her career starts with the Fighting Sioux.
