Chiefs continue winning ways

The Wheatland Chiefs edged the Medicine Hat Venom 5-3 in Hussar on Jan. 2 to open up the 2015 portion of the schedule.
Brendan Moore opened up the scoring for the local double-A midget team at the 13:25 mark of the first from James Farmer and Alec Biletsky. They added to their lead 10 minutes later as Cole Busslinger capitalized from Farmer and Bilesky at 3:27 of the first to make it 2-0 Chiefs.
The Venom were able to tie it up with a couple of quick power play goals to open up the second.
Chris Rebeyka was able to restore the lead for the Chiefs as he found the back of the net at 6:36 but a mere minute and half later Medicine Hat scored to tie the game once again.
Jason Hobson was able to regain the one goal lead going into second intermission and James Farmer capped off the win with an insurance marker in the third.
In another tightly played game against the Okotoks Oilers the next night, the Chiefs opened the scoring as Busslinger fired one home at the 7:12 mark of the first.
Okotoks was able to tie it in the second to make for an exciting third, where the Chiefs got one from Hobson and Farmer to seal the win.
The Chiefs will play their next game on Jan. 10 versus Sylvan Lake Lakers (6 p.m.) at the Hussar Arena.
Warriors picking up points
The Wheatland Warriors salvaged a 4-4 road tie with Sylvan Lake on Jan. 3.
The local bantam double-A team kept pace with the first place Lakers, as they are only five points back.
Tarun Fizer opened the scoring for the Warriors at 8:46 of the first before the Lakers replied with one of their own 20 seconds later to knot it at one after one .
Tyler Skehar, Hassan Akl and Tanner Boutin scored in the second to make 4-1 Warriors going into the third.
Unfortunately, Sylvan Lake sustained a late rally with three goals to tie the game.
The local bantam double-A team will play on Jan. 9 at Strathmore Family Centre versus the Southwest Rockies (8:15 p.m.).
Braves put on a clinic
Keith Klemmensen’s squad is continuing their consistent offensive output as they laid a thumping on their opponents by identical 12-2 scores in consecutive games.
In the first game against Airdrie on Jan. 3, it was Kyle Bray and Kyle Crnkovic leading the way with hat tricks for the Wheatland Braves.
Other players that scored for the local double-A peewee team were Kage Yellowfly with two, while Mo Hakim, Tristan Zandee, Nolan Bailey and Brayden Kapty rounded out the offence.
The team had period leads of 9-0 and 12-0 before Airdrie broke Jackson Berry’s shutout with two in the third.
Crnkovic continued his play into the next game in Lacombe with four goals, Zandee had two, while Bray, Max Kathol, Max Schafer, Adam Kirkpatrick, Anson McMaster and Tegan Skehar each added one.
The Braves will be back in Airdrie to take on the Lightning Red (1:45 p.m.) on Jan. 10 before returning to the Strathmore Family Centre to face off against the Red Deer TBS (5:00 p.m.) on Jan. 11.
