Pumpkin hunting is back

The second annual Great Pumpkin Hunt is set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 between 2-4 p.m. at Kinsmen Park.
This is a great opportunity for young kids and their parents to have fun on a scavenger hunt together to find their pumpkin in the park.
Once they have found it, they have the opportunity to carve them and take them home.
The Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) committee were discussing alternative activities to engage families and the turnout was so successful last year that they decided to do it again.
“We’re talking about other things we can do for families in Strathmore and another community had done something similar. So I got the idea from another FCSS office and adapted to what Strathmore would want,” said Catherin Walsh, FCSS Strathmore director. “The Great Pumpkin hunt is put on by Strathmore FCSS and the Youth Club of Strathmore and the cost is $7 per child.”
The objective is that the children will come to the park and hunt for their numbered pumpkin that was assigned to them. After that they will receive treats and hot chocolate.
“The children will come, we’ll have all the pumpkins numbered, and they will be put out in Kinsman Park. They’ll register with us (and) be given a number, then the children and their parents go and find their pumpkin,” said Walsh. “Once they find their pumpkins, they bring them back and we’ll have carving kits and they can stay and carve their pumpkins and enjoy music, hot chocolate and treats.”
On Saturday, Nov 1, there will be Pumpkins in the Park event also put on by FCSS to display the carving creativity around Kinsmen Park.
“We’re doing Pumpkins in the Park, and what that is, is for anybody who would like to bring their carved pumpkin to Kinsmen Park and drop it off. There will be a trailer there where they can leave the pumpkins then we will disperse them in the park and light them up from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” said Walsh.
Registration deadline for the hunt was Wednesday, Oct. 22 at the FCSS office or by calling 403-934-9090.
