The Leaping Dog Racing Strathmore Women’s Triathlon will be hosting their 12th annual event on Aug. 17th.
The event is intended for female athletes who are looking to begin triathlon races in a comfortable atmosphere. The event still has 80 spots in the triathlon, 28 for the duathlon and 11 for the relay.
Volunteers are desperately needed as the numbers are low compared to past years.
While all the participants are competing, there is a charity being fundraised for called “Fast and Female”, which provides the opportunity for girls from ages nine to 19 to participate in sports.
“There is a 500 meter swim, 20 km bike and a 5 km run,” said Deanne Jabs, race director.
“(New this year) is the duathlon which is a run-bike-run event (that includes) a 5 km run, 20 km bike and a 5 km run.”
The volunteers have been slow to come this year, and with the triathlon fast approaching, the organizing committee is looking for anyone who is qualified and the age of 16 and up.
“Right now we are at the point of desperation. We would love to have the town involvement in the event if they can,” said Jabs. “It is a great opportunity to showcase the town and be a part of the event and experience is not required.”
“We will allow, if there is space available, online (registration) and they can sign-up at the Tri It store in Calgary,” said Jabs.
The package pick up is three days prior to the event.
“It is a beginner-friendly race. For 40 per cent of the racers, it is their first ever athletic experience,” said Jabs.
“Our youngest (racer) is 17 and our oldest is 63. The average age is 35.”
Jabs added that a lot of the competitors are mothers that set goals and are able to achieve them through this triathlon without going to the gym.
“One cool thing about this race is the volunteers because we have them on traffic controls and counting times in the pool. The volunteers get the appreciation from all the racers,” said Jabs.
Jabs is hoping Strathmore will come out and support the great event.
