Town continues Alberta Cup sponsorship

Co-chairs for the 2014 Alberta Cup Wayne Hansen and Blair Wilson made a presentation and a request to town council on Dec. 18. Last year council had supported the Alberta Cup with a donation of $10,000, free ice time and use of the Civic Centre for the weekend. The men were asking for the same sponsorship level again for the upcoming Alberta Cup.
Last year council was unable to give Strathmore Minor Hockey (SMH) money in time to make necessary repairs to the Family Centre and build a press box.
“The best way we found to do that was for us to front it and then through sponsorship over two years to recoup those costs. Any of the profits that come from this 50 per cent of the profits from this event will be put into a separate fund, which was talked about through the minor hockey board, for a new facility at that time,” said Hansen.
SMH paid the fees themselves, putting them at a $17,000 deficit. They hope to recover some of those funds this year. If SMH does turn a bit of a profit then they do have plans of putting 50 per cent aside to go towards a new facility.
“If we make $50,000 then $25,000 of that would get put into a separate fund held by minor hockey solely for the building and development of a new facility,” said Hansen.
Council unanimously voted in favour of continuing the same level of sponsorship for the 2014 Alberta Cup.
