Curling Club wants women

The Strathmore Curling Club needs more women to grab their brooms and hit the ice to participate in their interclub bonspiels throughout the year. Ladies play Monday nights, men play Tuesday nights, youth play Wednesday nights, with Thursday and Friday reserved for mixed teams.
“We’re looking for more curlers all the time,” Joyce Koch said, part of the club’s executive committee. “Our youth program is doing pretty good, but we’re short on our ladies team and our mixed.”
Everyone is welcome; newcomers had the opportunity to learn the sport at the club’s Learn to Curl session on Nov. 27. Club membership from October to March is roughly $100.
“They can sign up themselves and we can put them with a team usually, or they can bring in their own team of four,” Koch said.
The club also offers “shorty bonspiels”, similar to a drop-in style, with four members needed per team. The first one of the season is Jan. 4.
The Strathmore Curling Rink has a new restaurant as well.
“They’re doing a great job – they’ve got Ukrainian food, all kinds of homemade burgers,” Koch said.
For Koch, curling is an active way to meet people around town.
“Come out and see. It’s kind of nice to get people out who have never curled,” she said. “To meet people here, it’s been great. It’s socializing with people and having a little fun.”
