Brianne Coulter grew up playing fastpitch a few years behind her sister Katie in Strathmore, but is now making a name for herself and her team, the Intermediate Calgary Sluggers. On August 1, the Sluggers defeated the Calgary Riot at Shouldice Park in their best of three series for the Division II League Title.
The Sluggers had won last year as well, but Coulter was not on the roster.
“The first game that we won was really exciting, because we always have good games with this team when we play them in the league,” said Brianne. The Sluggers had won both season games against the Riot, too. “They’re a good team. In provincials we came third, and they came fourth, so we’re very even.”
The Sluggers took the first game 10-3, and the second 7-5.
“It was like a flawless (second) game. We were hitting really well, everyone was making their plays,” she said. “We were winning 7-1 the whole game, and then they started to come back a bit. So we really kind of, buckled down, and just finished the game off strong.”
The Sluggers weren’t even aware they won – the time was up but no one alerted the team. The game finished in the fifth inning due to the rule of no new innings after the hour and a half limit.
“We didn’t know it was the last inning so it was kind of uneventful,” Coulter said.
The third base woman is looking forward to next season’s start in April; the team had become very close.
“I think there were seven new girls, and we just clicked very well. We meshed, and had a very, very good team this year,” she said. “In a couple years, we’re going to be competitive with my sister’s team (in Senior B). She can’t hold it over my head now.”
