Strathmore’s Austin Biletsky traveled to Sudbury, Ont. for the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship from July 30 to Aug. 2 – his proudest accomplishment in his young golf career so far. He unfortunately missed the cut of +9 after two rounds. One hundred and fifty six boys ages 18 and under competed; luckily, as a 17-year-old, Biletsky is able to compete in 2014 as well.
“I can qualify again next year. I’m hoping to do a little better,” he said.
His grandpa accompanied him for the tournament; it was him that inspired Biletsky to golf growing up. As the teen’s skill grew, the pasttime turned into something much more serious.
“I want to go to school with it,” Biletsky said, wishing for a scholarship to a university in the United States. “That’s what I’m hoping for.”
He often visits his grandparents in Arizona during the winter—and visits the local links there as well. He credits Strathmore Golf Club at home, however, for all their support.
Biletsky will be going into his final year at Strathmore High this fall, and for now, is practicing every day with his golf coach for high school provincials, which Strathmore is hosting come September. Biletsky finds the mental aspect of the game the most challenging, but feels he’s strong all over the green.
“I’ll be trying to get more consistent,” he said. “My lengths give me an advantage. That’s probably my strong suit.”
Biletsky has won two bronzes on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour, has tied at 24th at the CN Future Links Western Championship, and has tied at 15th during the Alberta Junior Boys Championship.
