Strathmore High School, SHS, basketball teams played what could have been their final games on March 7. The girls played against the Chestermere Lakers in the first game of the night. It looked like the girls were going to be heading to zones until the Lakers came up and bypassed them in the final minute, winning the game 52-51.
“The girls lost by one. It was a tough game. They lead the game for all but the last minute,” said Jerry Flaws, who was refereeing the game.
It was a tough loss, but with the boys team playing right after, SHS still had a chance to send a team to zones.
“The boys game was never close. The boys took an early lead and never let Highwood get close,” said Flaws.
The boys dominated the game, winning with a 20-point lead, ending the game at 59-39.
Coach Kyle Larson said he felt the defense was very good.
“We have improved a lot from the start of the year and we hope to compete hard and play well in zones,” said Larson.
Larson said he wants the boys to focus on the fundamentals of the game and play with more focus and intensity.
They played their first round of zones in Cochrane on March 9; the results were unavailable at press time.
