Ladies night in Standard

“Howdy” and a mason jar filled with country punch is what greeted women when they arrived at the Standard Hall on Friday night during the local Lionettes “Divas in Denim” night of entertainment and fundraiser.
The annual Ladies Night was a sold out with women from Hussar, Gleichen, Rockyford, Rosebud, Cluny, Strathmore and Standard. They came out dressed in their finest duds and everything from Wranglers to swing skirts, ten gallon hats, rhinestone belts and buckles and bunny ears were found in the crowd.
Yvonne Way (President of the Standard Lionettes) introduced to those gathered, Liz, their honorary member who originally came from Florida. Liz the Lion has made many trips with the various members of the group on holidays and has an entire picture album of photos to prove it.
The evening progressed with an outstanding meal provided by Kim’s Catering out of Strathmore. Throughout the evening the ladies had opportunities to bid on silent and live auction items. Local businesses contributed all the items, as well as the many door prizes that were won that evening. The largest ticket item during the live auction was the ever popular flower arrangement from Donna Sanden-Nelson and Maril Clark, which raised just over $400 after a bidding war.
Drew Gregory, an up-and-rising country music artist who recently returned from another trip down to Nashville, provided the entertainment for the evening. Gregory and one of his hired guns, Kevin Love (lead guitarist) wooed the ladies with their country music and their charm. Gregory has had many opportunities presented to him since his return from the States and said that he “is excited to have been asked to be the guest speaker at the Standard Graduation at the end of May”. He then dedicated one of his original songs that he wrote while traveling through Texas called Small Town Way. The crowd kept up the applause for the concert and were treated to a couple of more encores.
The raffle which provides a lot of the income for the evening was won by four women. Carol Elias won the sapphire pendant (donated by Jon Adamson Signs and Standard Spray), Lindsay Koole won the sapphire Pendant (donated by Encana), Amy Christensen won the $400 Coach handbag (donated by Gregory Harriman and F-R Ranches) and Marlis Nielsen won the Sapphire earrings (donated by Encana).
The Lionettes had another successful evening and are already making plans for next year’s event. Keep your eyes out for your tickets next year at this time.
