Every year Crowther Memorial Junior High student’s go to eastern Canada to see what the other side of the country has to offer. One big fundraiser is held each year for it, a spaghetti dinner. This year marks the 25th year for the trip.
“I wanted the children to see the capital of Canada and the oldest city in Canada, Quebec with all the buildings and everything and just the different outlook,” said Bev Upshaw, who began the tradition.
She has always enjoyed traveling, and said she used to enjoy the small school trips she use to take when she was in high school. She said she wanted to provide the same sort of things to some of the kids she taught. Upshaw taught school in eastern Canada, before coming west to teach. She started at Westmount Elementary, where she took a Grade 6 class to eastern Canada for 10 days.
“It was good, we had a good time,” said Upshaw.
“I’d love to be going on it again, but it’s not the same because I don’t know these kids. I’d love to be going with them.”
This year there will be 96 Grade 9 students heading to Ontario and Quebec. The trip will cost each student approximately $1,375 and just under $7,000 was raised at the annual dinner  which will help offset some of the expenses. There was close to 800 people in attendance for the dinner, which was completely run by the students.
