The Western Irrigation District (WID) has announced a significant expansion of its service area, growing from 110,000 acres to 140,000 acres following strong support from irrigators.
The approval, which was announced on April 8, marks an additional 30,000 acres being brought into the district, reflecting the demand for water delivery in the region.
In the last three years, WID has already increased its expansion to 15,000 acres, demonstrating an increase in irrigated farming.
“This expansion is an important step forward for our district and the producers we serve,” said CEO Troy Tangedal. “It highlights not only the confidence in our system, but also our ability to responsibly manage and deliver water as demand continues to grow.”
Along with the ongoing investments in infrastructure, operational improvements and long-term planning, the WID is able to handle the increased capacity while maintaining reliable service and environmental stewardship.
The expansion is expected to provide more producers with access to irrigation.
Based right here in Strathmore and founded in 1894, WID continues to play a key role in supporting a resilient agricultural network in southern Alberta, emphasizing efficient water management and sustainable growth for future generations.
