A proud and devoted grandmother, Sheila was deeply involved in the lives of her four grandchildren. She delighted in sharing stories of their accomplishments and adventures with anyone willing to listen.
Sheila was a devoted wife to Bill for 56 years. The two were married in Red Deer, Alberta in 1970. Sheila worked as a nurse at the Provincial Training School in Red Deer. She also worked at the Co-op in both Hanna and Strathmore in the accounts receivables.
Together, Sheila and Bill moved to Hanna, Alberta, where Bill was transferred to the Co-op. They lived in Hanna for 2 years where they also ran the Capital movie theatre. When Bill was transferred to the Co-op in Strathmore, Alberta they decided to settle for good. In 1974, they welcomed their first daughter, Michelle.
In 1978, Bill and Sheila purchased the Joyland Theatre, where they became deeply rooted in the heart of the Strathmore community. In 1979, they welcomed their second daughter, Melissa, completing their family.
Sheila was always eager to be involved and volunteered tirelessly with local schools, often joining field trips and lending a hand wherever needed. She had a natural ability to connect with children and was always ready to help.
Sheila was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 30 years and volunteered hundreds of hours with Strathmore Legion Branch #10. She especially enjoyed helping with bingo and her time with the Ladies’ Auxiliary.
She was also a dedicated volunteer with the Strathmore Agricultural Society for many years, serving in a variety of roles, most recently as a public member on the finance committee.
After selling the theatre in 2014 to Jeff and Kathy Larsen, Sheila transitioned into what she called “retirement,” though she remained as active as ever. She continued her involvement with both the Legion and the Agricultural Society.
Sheila enjoyed walking around the lake in her neighbourhood and had a special fondness for her neighbours’ little girl, Addy.
Sheila will be remembered for her passion for life, her generosity, and her firm but caring presence, whether keeping order at the movie theatre or offering help to anyone in need. Beneath her strong exterior was a deeply loving woman, a loyal friend to many, and a fiercely devoted family member.
Her family was her everything, and she will be deeply missed.
