Joan Buchberger, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the age of 85. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, talented artist, and a kind and caring friend to many. Joan lived a life filled with family, adventure, creativity, and love.

Joan began her working life in the late 1950s with Imperial Oil, before pursuing her passion for design and working with various furniture companies in the interior design industry.

She married her beloved husband, Lorne, on March 26, 1970, in Calgary, AB. Together they built a wonderful life that took them around the world, living in Singapore, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and Doha, Qatar. Joan embraced every adventure, making friends and memories wherever they went. She loved golf, winning several tournaments overseas—this included playing on golf courses in the desert made entirely of dirt, using square green mats instead of grass.

Later in life, Joan and Lorne spent thirteen years as snowbirds in Indio, CA, where they enjoyed warm winters filled with golf, socializing, and wonderful friendships. Their time in Indio became another cherished chapter in their life together, surrounded by people they enjoyed and many of the activities they loved.

Joan was a gifted and expressive artist who loved painting flowers, western scenes, and abstracts. Her passion for art grew throughout her life, and she was proud to share her work by exhibiting and selling her paintings at art shows. Some of her most captivating scenes include harvest life on the family farm in Strathmore, AB, which she and Lorne have owned for many years. She also loved cooking, sharing, and trying new recipes with her daughters, playing cards and games such as sticks and mahjong, line dancing, and simply spending time with family and friends. She had a wonderful gift for preserving memories, creating scrapbooks filled with photographs and treasured mementos for her family.

She also loved gardening, and the garden she and Lorne created was always something to admire. It was abundant, beautiful, and, as the family would happily admit, frequently raided by everyone.

Joan is survived by her husband Lorne, her daughters, Laura Buchberger and Lana Tabaracci; her grandchildren, Jacob, Jesse, Emma (Laura), Carson, Blake, Owen, and Olivia (Lana); and her son-in-law Rick.  She is also survived by her brother, Tom Glendinning and sister-in-law, Lorraine, who reside in Grand Prairie, AB. 

Joan leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, kindness, creativity, and family memories that will be cherished for generations to come. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Memorial Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.
