Gregory (Greg) Richard Belton, passed away on April 1, 2026, in Strathmore, Alberta, after a long courageous battle with Huntington’s Disease. Surrounded by his family and dearest friends sharing conversations and memories, while the gentle sound of SportsNet played in the background, Greg was carried peacefully away. He knew he was loved.
Born on February 9, 1984, in High Level, Alberta, Greg led a life filled with dedication and love for his family and friends that he held dear throughout his 42 years. Greg moved to Strathmore, Alberta in 1986 with his mother Marlene and father Rick where, as an only child, he quickly began to develop the most remarkable friendships that lasted a lifetime. Through neighbours, school, teammates, fishing pals and university mates, Greg built a family around himself like no other and held them all close for as long as he lived.
At a young age Greg developed a love of sports, particularly baseball. Whether it was hockey, basketball, volleyball, badminton, golf, snowboarding or baseball he played and stayed involved in whatever he could right up until his final week. With a unique sense of humour, Greg loved to bring laughter to the world and had a keen sense for fun. Much of his youth and young adulthood was spent touring around Alberta with sports teams, fishing and camping with his parents, and seeking adventure and joking around with his friends.
Greg’s passion for sports guided him through a University Degree in Kinesiology, followed by his first career as a personal trainer. In later years, Greg also worked as a radiation safey officer and construction labourer. Through all his endeavours Greg did what he did best, meeting and helping new people and bringing light to the lives of everyone who crossed his path.
In May 2014, Greg married the love of his life, Michelle. Together they created a home and family built with loyalty, mutual respect, love and compassion. Michelle was Greg’s confidant and best friend. Their two boys, Carter and Nash, were Greg’s whole world. Together, they shared many camping and fishing trips, hockey games, and travelling adventures. He cherished every moment spent with them and took great pride in them.
Greg was the inspiration for the annual fundraiser and Huntington’s Disease awareness event Home Runs for Huntington’s, which was established by his closest friends and ran for 5 years leaving behind a legacy of awareness, donations towards research, and support for his family. Greg’s journey was defined by love, adventure, courage and resilience. As a husband, father, son, uncle, and friend his influence was profound, and his light was felt by all those around him.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Michelle, his sons Carter and Nash, and his mother Marlene. Greg was predeceased by his father Rick, grandfather Rolf Huber, and grandparents Ian and Jean Belton. Greg will be greatly missed by his wife, boys, mother, Nana and all his extended family and numerous loyal friends.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to Dr. Sader, Dr. Sarna, Dr. Maki, Dr. Fanning, all the staff and care team at Sagewood; particularly those on the Langdon Unit. As well as to the teams at the Strathmore District Hospital in the Emergency department and Acute Care Unit for the great care and support received at the end of Greg’s journey.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to the Huntington’s Society of Canada in Greg’s honour.
A funeral service will be held Sunday April 19, 2026, at Lord of All Lutheran Church at 1:30 pm.
