The Strathmore Musial Arts Society, along with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, presents two-time Grammy nominee Guy Davis, along with local opening act Melissa Matheson on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Strathmore Travel Lodge.

Storkson has been involved with the Strathmore Musical Arts Society since its conception in 1996 and she currently sits as president of the board. The Musical Arts Society has been presenting Strathmore with first class live music for nearly 30 years and they are happy to continue with their commitment to offering “top quality music in a dinner theatre atmosphere.”

Davis has performed with the Strathmore Musical Arts Society in the past, so having him return is a delight.

“He’s a top-notch blues player,” said Storkson. “The icing on the cake is having Melissa Matheson there with her new single Life of a Farmer.”

Matheson has recently released her first single Life of a Farmer on Sept. 30. Having lived in Strathmore her whole life, Matheson is eager to share her music with her community.

Matheson’s musical journey began in 2020, in the height of the pandemic. In three short years, she taught herself how to play the guitar and really reached her peak with her singing.

“Every opportunity seems to lead to the next opportunity,” said Matheson. “Obviously, the pandemic brought a lot of challenges, but the one thing it also brought was the gift of time.”

Matheson has been a part of the audience for the Strathmore Musical Arts Society in the past, but this event will mark her stage debut for this event. She is hopeful that she will be able to work with them again in the future.

“I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said.

Guy Davis will play two 45-minute sets ensuring ticket holders get their full money’s worth of musical entertainment. Davis describes himself as a musician, actor, author and songwriter. His musical genre can’t be grouped into just one type of music – it’s a blend of blues, folk, rock, rap, spoken word and world music just to name a few.

Davis has performed in the past here in Strathmore for the Musical Arts Society and he is excited to be back.

“I’ve got a lot of history in Canada – in fact all over the doggone place, particularly Alberta,” he said. “When I come to Strathmore this time, I’ve got songs that go to the edge of the blues; that go outside of the blues.”

Davis said people who come to his show on Oct. 14 are in for a treat.

“I ask that everybody be prepared to have a good time and also to sing along with some of these songs,” he said.
