Calgary woman deceased after being struck by vehicle in Strathmore

A Calgary woman suffered fatal injuries as a result of a collision with an oncoming vehicle in Strathmore, Oct. 20 while attempting a crossing at a marked crosswalk.
According to Staff Sgt. Mark Weilgosz, Strathmore RCMP, the collision occurred at approximately 7:43 p.m. and RCMP members were called to respond at the intersection between Thomas Drive and Brentwood Drive.
“Our members attended to find that a pedestrian who was crossing within the crosswalk had been struck by a vehicle that was travelling southbound,” said Weilgosz.
The pedestrian was a 38-year-old woman, who was a resident of Calgary. She was transported to hospital by Emergency Medical Services and was pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries from the collision.
Weilgosz explained RMCP were not in a position to release the identity of the victim as of Oct. 25, though it was indicated efforts from RCMP had been made to contact and notify the woman’s next of kin.
“On the evening in question, the weather was not adverse – in fact it was fairly warm out, there was no snow cover yet, it had not snowed yet, however, it was in the darker hours of the evening,” he added.
“From what we can gather, there were no overt unusual factors present in the collision itself. Our collision analyst did attend the scene to conduct an investigation and scene examination.”
Weilgosz said RCMP will determine what, if any, charges are appropriate in relation to the collision following the conclusion of the scene examination.
The driver of the vehicle is reported to not have been physically injured as a result of the collision.
“Incidents such as this are always tragic and unfortunate whenever they occur. I think the only advice I can really give is – and it is not specific to this matter itself, whether you are a motorist or a pedestrian, I think it is useful for everyone to remain vigilant of their surroundings, and certainly give motorists space ahead of you as you are approaching intersections or crosswalks,” said Weilgosz. “We want to make sure that everyone is observant of the rules of the road, but also as pedestrians we are aware of our surroundings to ensure that everyone can be safe on the roadways.”
Strathmore RCMP have released no other information regarding the incident prior to publication.
