Local Scotiabank makes donation to SMHA

Strathmore’s local Scotiabank has once again supported the Strathmore Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) with a $1,000 donation.

The donation was made as part of Scotiabank’s hockey club and sponsorship program, which allows the branch to make an annual donation to a minor hockey club within the community.

Branch Manager Michelle Bissett said it’s a versatile grant that tends to make a big difference for local teams.

“The last couple years, we have (donated to) the SMHA, but we could go between a few different associations if we needed to. Basically, we just have $1,000 annually that we can donate,” said Bissett.

“We also have hockey kits that come as part of it that we are able to provide to the team. It just has some little things for the members on the team like hats, hockey pucks and scarves.”

Representatives from the SMHA, as well as members of the team receiving the support, collected the donation on Feb. 16.

According to Bissett, the money is not required to be spent in any specific capacity and may simply be used however the team needs it.

“The kids are always very, very excited because the money can be used for whatever they need as part of their team. Whether that’s fees for something or to help pay for a trip, or it just helps them to be able to play hockey within the community,” explained Bissett.

“When they put in the application for the donation, they can specify exactly what it’s going to be used for, but for the most part, it’s just whatever the team needs.”

Though she was unable to give an exact timeline, Bissett estimated the program has been running annually for the last seven or eight years.

“I love being a part of this. Especially here in Strathmore, I know what a big impact the hockey community has out here,” said Bissett.

“To be able to be a part of it, it’s definitely something special, and something that we are very proud to be a part of.”
