Cuthbertson, Daphne

Daphne Cuthbertson, 83, of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on January 9, 2020. Daphne is lovingly adored and forever missed by her son Graham (Kim), grandchildren Lochlan and Gillian and her daughter Tracy (Gary) all of Calgary. Daphne leaves behind two sisters Margaret and Gloria along with 3 generations of nieces and nephews in Australia. Daphne is predeceased by her husband Henry (Harry), her parents Claude and Ethel Vautin and her sister Beverley.
Born in Cairns, Australia, Daphne was the second oldest daughter of four. She left home at the young age of 21 on a cruise to Canada, however she ended up staying in Vancouver rather than returning home. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Calgary where she met Harry and they were married in 1961. They started farming south of Strathmore after the kids were born, eventually building their homestead in the community of Lyalta.
Daphne’s hobbies kept her busy during the cold winter months on the farm, whether it was knitting, sewing, crochet, ceramics or macramé. In the warm summers she took advantage of the large garden to preserve enough vegetables, can fruit, jam and jellies, to last till the next season. Spring and Fall were busy with seeding and harvest where Daphne worked alongside Harry in the fields. Neighbours, family, friends and visitors all enjoyed the benefit of Daphne’s love of cooking and baking, no one ever left the farm hungry. Daphne continued to work full time through most of their time at the farm as a bookkeeper in Calgary.
After farming for 32 years, they retired to Calgary. Daphne continued her hobbies and traveling “home” to Australia, her last trip was in 2017. Daphne’s main focus was always her children and grandchildren, who can no doubt still feel her love.
It was Daphne’s wish that a private family service be held. The family is forever grateful for the dedicated care from the team at Bethany Riverview. If desired, memorial tributes may be made in Daphne’s name to the Bethany Riverview 200 2915 26 Ave SE Calgary, AB T2B 2W6. Condolences may be sent to the family directly by email to rememberingdaphne@shaw.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Eden Brook Funeral Home.
