Welcome to summer camp 2019

By Aia Hughes The Child, Youth and Family Hub

Summer camp is about fun in the sun and exciting activities. The Child, Youth and Family Hub have hired two new coordinators to plan an adventurous, active and healthy summer for kids and teens in Strathmore.
From STEM activities to hiking to fantastic field trips, there’s sure to be something for everyone to choose from. Summer camps are the perfect way to avoid the summer slide, which is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills, forge new friendships and discover new skills.
“Attending camp is a wonderful way for kids to keep their minds and bodies active,” said Aia Hughes, program supervisor. “Our camps are designed to learn about nature, take on new responsibilities, gain independence and develop critical social skills. We really encourage all caregivers to give their kids the gift of camp.”
Five reasons kids and teens should attend summer camp:
• Adventure: summer camp is about a wide variety of fun adventures and new experiences, especially exploring the outdoors. The Hub has a new adventure for every child and teen. Visit Strathmore.ca or Facebook for camp themes.
• Healthy fun: camps offer fun, stimulating activities that engage the body and mind, and also help children and teens learn the importance of nutrition to help improve their eating habits.
• Personal growth: While being away from the routine back home, youth have a chance to learn new skills, and develop confidence and independence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges.
• New friendships: Amidst the fun of camp games, songs, swimming, canoeing and talent shows, campers meet new friends and strengthen existing friendships.
•Memories: Summer camp is an unforgettable experience that will give each camper memories (and campfire stories) that will last a lifetime. Youth return to school with plenty of camp stories to share.
Camps for Kindergarten-Grade 6 will run Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Grades 7-9 are heading out every Wednesday throughout the summer. To ensure all kid and teens can attend camp, the Hub offers subsidies to those in need thanks to the Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign and United Way funding. For more information call 403-934-4918.
