Net zero program at Strathmore High School

Have you ever heard of a “net zero” school? A net zero school has basically zero energy output which means the school tries to make their environmental footprint smaller.
Strathmore High School (SHS) is working towards becoming a net zero school by becoming more environment-friendly and trying to minimize its energy output.
“I enjoy net zero because it is very important in my opinion,” says Reanna Thiessen, a member of the net zero program at SHS. “We as a school are trying to become efficient and environmentally friendly for right now.”
Mark Schweitzer and Leslie Larson, both teachers at SHS, run the program. There are currently around 20 members in the program, and the group encourages new members to join the program at any time.
During learning strategies, a 30-minute block designed for homework completion as well as homeroom time is when the net zero program group of students do their work. The group functions with the students working on various things during their time together.
The net zero program is presently working on a $3 million project for SHS. The program received a $1.5 million grant towards their project and their biggest community sponsor is currently Enmax.
The net zero group is focusing on solar panels. Their aim is for the school’s energy input and output to be exactly equal. They are directing their time towards solar energy because they believe heating, cooling and electricity are the biggest facets that they can work on to become a more efficient school.
“At Strathmore High, we are trying to do our part to help out,” said Thiessen. “As a society, we are moving towards becoming more environment-friendly, especially Canada.”
Net zero is attempting to use fewer fossil fuels in the school and instead use solar panels to become more economical and environmentally helpful.
The net zero program at SHS is looking for more sponsors throughout the community. Anyone who wants to make a beneficial impact on the environment or help out economically is encouraged to contact SHS’s net zero program. Any student or person in the community who wants to volunteer their time and resources is welcome to join the net zero program at any time. Call the school for more details, 403-934-3135.
