Finding accessibility

By Steven Greene Times Contributor

As I discussed in a previous column, I mentioned I noticed a lack of wheelchair accessibility in certain areas in town. What I forgot to mention in that column is that even some restaurants and convenience stores are just as bad.
For example, I went to a local store the other day. Honestly, it was so small, I ended up having to leave due to the lack of accessibility. I understand products need to be displayed, but people need to understand that people like myself need to have a certain amount of space to be able to get around and look at the products.
As far as restaurants go, I realize there’s a lack of accessibility in certain areas as well. Although I appreciate them trying to accommodate my needs, I feel some places can do a little better.
One idea that comes to mind is having tables made specifically for families that live with people who have disabilities. From my experiences I haven’t seen very many tables that reach the height that I would need, so small changes like that would be great.
And as far as any local businesses go, I personally feel that if I’m going to shop at any store or restaurant, it should be mandatory they have automatic doors; that way I have access to be able to get in them. There have been a few places where people had to hold doors for me. Now I understand people are willing to help me with certain things and although I appreciate the offer, I sometimes feel it’s necessary to let me handle things myself, as I want to be as independent as possible.
The point I’m trying to get at is if someone is going to open a local business, please be open minded to those who aren’t able to have access to certain areas like most other people can because not everyone is able to do a lot of things that most others can; these small changes can definitely make a difference in someone else’s life.
I hope you enjoyed this column, and if you happen to see me out for a stroll, or at a store or restaurant, please feel free to come and say hi. And if at any time anyone would like to get a hold of me, please send me an email at stampsfan4ever@gmail.com.
