Sixteen-year-old Kathryn Pease took to the outdoor stage at the Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days to belt out some tunes for a packed audience.
Pease started singing when she was five years old, and has been singing at the Strathmore Stampede event since the age of nine. During this year’s event, she performed five songs on the outdoor stage each day.
She said her dad, Graydon, served as inspiration to her to start singing.
“My dad was always singing. I always heard him, so I really like singing,” said Pease.
Both father and daughter used to perform at the Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days outdoor stage together, but now the younger Pease mainly sings on her own.
The first song they sang together was ‘Butterfly Fly Away’ by Miley Cyrus.
‘Suds in the Bucket’ by Sara Evans is her favourite song.
“I did that one a long time ago and I haven’t sang it in a while, but I decided to bring it back this year and I really like doing it,” said Pease.
The teen attends Strathmore High School, and she’ll be entering Grade 12 this year. Last year, she joined the drama class and performed as Ebony in the four-night school production of Les Misérables. In Grade 10, Pease took the main role of Eve in a smaller production titled ‘6 Ways to Break Up With Someone.’
Pease also performed at the Canada Day celebration this year.
She plans on coming back to sing at the Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days next year and would like to continue to sing at events around town. Eventually she would like to go into teaching.
“I do want to keep focusing on my singing and trying to get better,” said Pease.
