Steve Bennis, with the Business Development Bank of Canada and treasurer of the Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce, delivered a Chamber of Commerce update for the town of Strathmore at the town council meeting on Sept. 21.

Business After Five
Bennis said the Chamber had its first Business After Five event in August with Heather Rodgers and her team from Action Insurance.
“She liked the event. She thought it was really successful and now she wants to host a Lunch and Learn to talk about her expertise in the insurance side of her business,” he said.
At the end of the month, the chamber will host another Business After Five event with Hob’s Hobbies.

Lunch and Learn
Bennis said in October the Chamber will support another Lunch and Learn with the Royal Fi-nancial Group. The topic discussed will cover being an entrepreneur in today’s economy.

New Centre
The Chamber of Commerce now has a new permanent office in the business centre located at 129 Second Avenue.
Shelley Toderian, Chamber executive director, will be at the new office Tuesdays and Wednes-days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. These will be considered regular business hours.
“It’s been over a year since the Chamber had a permanent home, so we’re pretty excited about our new location and being in the downtown core so we’re accessible to the general public,” said Bennis.
The Chamber will be hosting a grand opening on Thurs., Oct. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and this will coincide to help celebrate small business week as well.

Canada 150
Bennis said the Chamber is engaged with the Canada 150 project. Shelley Toderian is working with Kendra Armstrong and Tracy Simpson from the town as well as other volunteers to help prepare the application form.
“We submitted a letter of support for the proposed project and we’re hoping for approval for funding for Canada’s Heritage Canada 150 fund once they review the application,” said Bennis.

Fun Casino Night
Fun Casino Night will be held on Oct. 1 and will be hosted at the Royal Canadian Legion.
This year marks the Legion’s 90th anniversary, and the Fun Casino will be held partly to support the Legion and to help celebrate the milestone with the Legion and its members. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the Fun Casino starts at 8 p.m.
The Chamber of Commerce is selling tickets now to Legion and Chamber members for $25 each and to non-members for $35 each. Those interested can purchase tickets on the Chamber of Commerce website or at the Legion, the ATB or Rocky’s Bakery.
Throughout the course of the evening, there will also be a 50-50 draw and silent auction to sup-port the evening and the Legion.
“We’d like to invite everybody to bring your friends and family. It’s going to be a great time,” said Bennis.
Professional dealers Aces are Wild will be hosting the casino event and will also provide les-sons for those who are unsure how to play. Participants will receive $50,000 in fun money, and winners will have prizes to bid on at the end of the night.
