Commitment, taking initiative, and advocating for students, proved valuable traits for three Strathmore staff members who were recognized for their efforts by being presented with one of three distinguished divisional awards.
Three Sacred Heart Academy employees were singled out by their coworkers and presented with their award by senior administration and trustees in Strathmore on May 21.
“It’s a sign of the good work that they do with their kids,” said Deputy Superintendent Gary Christe. “When we recognize the staff for their work, they represent all staff. They become a symbol for all the work that’s being done at the schools.”
Jennifer Hall, a Grade 1 teacher, was the recipient of the Above & Beyond divisional award, which recognizes performance of selfless dedication, unquestioning commitment, and superior skill. Her colleague Deanna White also walked away with recognition for a positive helpful caring attitude, contributing to a positive work environment, and showing initiative and resourcefulness, when she accepted the Power of One award. Standing out for her exemplary commitment, superior teaching and building strong relationships, Lisa Hanson was presented with the Master Teacher award.
“I think it’s crucial that they’re recognized by our division,” said Paulette Chotowetz, principal at the Sacred Heart Academy.
“I think, what it celebrates, is that there is so much more to our schools than what people perceive it to be sometimes. And, there’s more to our teachers.”
The awards banquet recognized three individuals from each school in the division to receive the awards.
Chotowetz was also pleased with two other teachers accepting an award this year. Physical education teacher Genevieve Chisholm received the Edwin Parr award, which is presented to a first-year teacher, and she went on to represent Christ the Redeemer at the Zone awards banquet as well. Earlier this year, Grade 2 teacher, Lisa Scarpelli also walked away with the Christian Witness award in February.
“As a principal I think it’s really important that teachers celebrate each other’s gifts,” said Chotowetz. “They are all those things. They are masters, they are above and beyond, they are the power of one, and they’re just good people.”
