Strathmore U18 hockey player Sarah Lecavalier considered the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George a memorable moment for her and her teammates in their bronze medal winning performance with Team Alberta.
Team Alberta was able edge Saskatchewan 5-3 for the bronze medal.
“The experience at the Canada Winter Games was incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever get something like that again. It’s like a contrast to U18, there’s other sports there so they’re cheering you on,” said Lecavalier. “We didn’t have a lot of free time but we could go watch the other sports that were there. We got the chance to watch wheelchair basketball and they came and watched us and the caliber of sport there is just amazing.”
Team Alberta finished atop their pool with a 5-1 record and suffered their only loss in the semi-final to Ontario.
“We played really well in the bronze medal game against Saskatchewan,” said Lecavalier. “The whole team was just trying to make history. Alberta won gold at the last Winter Games, and our coach came in before the game and told us this is our opportunity to make history and be the first team in Alberta to medal in both years. We were playing for each other and for him, we had it in us and did it.”
Lecavalier thought it was a personal best in her second appearance at the Winter Games.
“I thought the Canada Winter Games were a great feeling for me. I got two goals in the first game against Nova Scotia and a shootout goal against Saskatchewan and again in the bronze medal game,” said Lecavalier. “I also accomplished what I wanted to with the leadership side.”
She added that the biggest key to success was that the team was able to use their speed effectively which led to most of their goals.
Her plans are to finish out the season at the Pursuit of Excellence and then go through the try-out process for the U18 Nationals later this spring.
