The Holy Cross junior A Hawks girl basketball team won bronze at the recent 3J Girls South Central Zones at Westmount School in Okotoks to wrap up the season.
Head coach Michael Annicchiarico gave much of the success in the third place finish to the improvements that were made throughout the year up to this point.
“We learned to play together more as a team, we improved in our passing of the basketball and taking better quality shots,” said Annicchiarico. “We improved with our positioning on defense so that we didn’t take as many fouls. Our defense was strong all year and opponents really had to work hard to score.”
He was thoroughly impressed with the mental toughness of the team and their ability to battle hard around the basket.
“Our strengths came in our ability to never get down on ourselves. We fought hard in every game no matter how far up or down we got,” said Annichiarico.
Other highlights included a tournament championship in Rosemary, a second place finish in their home tournaments and a consolation win in Crowther’s tournament.
As for the boys, they were able to win third place as well at zones in Strathcona- Tweedsmuir, which is also in Okotoks.
