Sykamore is coming home on April 17 to play a show for her fans in the area. The show, which will be free to the public, will be held at Strathmore High School (SHS).
“I will be playing some new songs off of my record coming out this year. So new music, it will be fairly intimate, I think it will be me and maybe one other musician, so it will be kind of just like an acoustic show, pretty casual, pretty laid back,” Jordan Ostrom, aka Sykamore, said of the show.
Last fall she won the ATB All Albertan Song Writing Contest with her song Heaven in the Pines, and part of winning the contest, in addition to the $10,000 prize, was that ATB would sponsor a show.
The idea of playing in her hometown was discussed, and when she remembered the SHS theatre, she knew they had the perfect venue.
Winning the ATB contest has done a lot for the singer professionally; thanks to the spotlight being shone on her she has gotten a lot of gigs and opportunities from it.
One of those opportunities was to have her song ‘I Can Make You Happy’ featured on the March 8 episode of Heartland.
“The thing that is almost more valuable to me is I think I’m taken a little bit more seriously as a songwriter, like I am very validated in my songwriting and that is something that is kind of priceless in a way,” said Ostrom.
“To gain the respect of your peers is something that you can’t really put a price tag on and so to showcase your song in such a public setting and to have it be approved by so many people is very encouraging to me.”
The concert at Strathmore High School will be April 17 at 7 p.m. and is open to anyone on a first come, first serve basis. To keep up-to-date on things happening with the talented musician watch her Facebook page ‘Sykamore.’ She’s expected to release her newest record later this year.
