East Wheatland reveals new name

East Wheatland School’s board of trustees revealed that, after the naming committee collected input from students, parents and the broader community, the new school will be named Wheatland Crossing.
Suggestions had included Four Corners and Prairie Gold, but the committee decided on Dec. 16 on their first choice.
The committee arrived at their decision, because Wheatland represented the county, wheat fields and and the area, whereas Crossing symbolized an intersection where everyone comes together before carrying on their own paths.
“I think everybody is feeling quite good about it,” said Bevan Daverne, Golden Hills School Division Superintendent. “It’s been quite a consultation process. The committee is feeling good about it. I think the board’s first impression upon hearing the name, that it’s a really good fit for the school.
“Certainly the board respects and appreciates the work of the committee and what they perceived to be a name that makes sense and it’s a good fit for the school and a representative of the area.”
According to East Wheatland School’s spearhead, Greg Lendvay, the school can begin to forge an identity through branding, now that the name has been revealed.
“I think it represents the school very well,” he said. “It allows us now to start working on the branding of our athletics, the floor and all that stuff as we continue to move forward now that we actually have a name.
“We haven’t officially revealed either school’s colours to the student body yet. We’ll start to brand and offer toques for kids. The goal in May is to have all school clothes, backpacks and T-shirts purchased.”
Overall, he wants all four schools to be represented equally when the students come to the new one.
The reveal of the school sign will take place close to the grand opening.
