Former UFA Bisons rearguard and current Drumheller Dragon Tristan Thompson was awarded for his efforts on the ice this season with the Rookie of the Year Award.
The Canmore native gave credit to the older guys on the team for helping his game develop over the course of the season.
“They were great, they show you what to expect playing 60 games and how you have to prepare night in and night out,” said Thompson. “It was a lot of developing and moving into junior this year was just more of a size and speed difference. I usually played a regular shift which was really good for me and in the playoffs I got to play when it really counted.”
He produced 16 points in 55 games and was very honoured to have received the award considering there were many other worthy candidates.
“There were lots of good players on our team, there were a couple of 16-year-olds that came from the Western League that were really good and they could have won it too,” said Thompson.
His work ethic on the ice did not go unnoticed as he gave honest effort at practice and in games.
“I always worked hard day in and day out at practice and worked as hard as I can in games,” said Thompson. “It’s whatever the coaches think and they thought I earned it with my play and how I progressed throughout the year.”
Thompson really relished his experience in the playoffs.
“It was great, too bad we couldn’t have gone a bit farther, but that happens,” said Thompson.
He will play one more year with Drumheller before beginning his scholarship in Alaska Fairbanks in the 2016/2017 season.
