The Crowther Memorial Junior High School badminton teams saw tremendous success during counties on April 22.
“At the juvenile level, Crowther Memorial showed well, taking 10 of 15 ribbons,” said Brad Huntley, Crowther’s badminton coordinator. “At the midget level, Crowther took 12 of 15 ribbons and at the bantam level, we took 13 of 15 ribbons,”
Huntley was impressed with the sportsmanship and hard work that the groups displayed.
“All day they showed a high level of skill and sportsmanship and their coaches are very proud of them,” said Huntley.
He admired how the athletes were able to come together in such a short time.
“These athletes had very little time to make the team, practice, gel with their partners, and then excel at the county competition,” said Huntley. “Although, their court time was limited these athletes took advantage where they could. Many would show up at optional practice times, like lunch and early morning practices.”
The coaches were hopeful that the players had fun throughout the tournament.
“Our goal, as coaches, for our players in the county tournament was twofold. Primarily, we want all our kids to really enjoy playing in the tournament,” said Huntley. “We wanted our players to experience a little more game pressure and a more anxious playing environment.”
Overall, the onus was on the players to find a rhythm and they lived up individual skill sets without a lot of the coaches help.
