The Crowther Memorial Junior High School senior boys and girls basketball teams got a taste of what high-end competitive basketball looked like as zone hosts on March 6-7.
Both teams held their own and earned every point, but knew that there were areas of their games that could have been sharper.
“In order to win big games and tournaments like zones you need to be able to play together as a team, and to work hard for each other,” said boys coach Matthew Laslo.
He did give credit to his defense for sticking together and making adjustments to play a better team game.
“Our defense is always the strongest part of our game. We came out a little flat again in our first game, sometimes trying to do too much, but once we simplified our game, and worked as a team things really came together,” said Laslo.
Despite a fourth place finish, he was thrilled with the team’s overall play.
“We had a couple close games. Our stand ut game was Friday night against Olds, where we really played good team defense and really pulled together to get a win,” said Laslo.
As for the girls, who also finished fourth, they were able to stay in every game and surprisesda lot of the top teams there.
“We were in every game. The level of competition this year was very high and we gave the top teams a run for their money,” said head coach Scott Koller.
He added that last week’s home tournament helped them prepare for a highly competitive tournament such as zones.
“I thought that we played really well as a team. I do think that the tournament last week helped us this week,” said Koller.
