The first annual Carseland Stick Spiel was an enjoyable event for all the players involved in the very entertaining games that were played on March 14.
“We started the league to get interest back in curling, try something new, and try to get people back out to check the sport out,” said Cory Alce, Carseland Curling Club president. “Anybody can do it – juniors and seniors,”
The sport involves some slightly different rules and a game that has modifications to curling.
“I think because you have no sweepers it’s a different aspect to the game and just to try something new,” said Alce. “There is no sweeping between the hog lines, so it’s only two person teams, only six rocks per team, per end. There is no free guard zone rule, so the first three rocks of every end, you can’t take out, doesn’t matter where they sit.”
The interest has grown over the course of the season, which has been a positive step for the sport.
“People really enjoy it,” said Alce. “I’ve heard them say that they’re going to bring more people out, so hopefully next year we can have it bigger, better and keep growing.”
He has encouraged anyone to come out and play.
