Warriors topple Taber

The Wheatland Warriors used an offensive onslaught to defeat the Taber Golden Suns 8-2 on Oct. 19 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
“We were doing some good things out there, we were on the body. We’ve been kind of fighting them to do that lately … aggressive on the puck, still need work there though,” said head coach Cody Brown. “The guys were relentless not losing battles, it was a decent effort for sure. I mean we definitely played a weaker team there so that’s tough in a way.”
Despite the lopsided win the Warriors know they still have some work to do.
“We only have two or three core things we’ve been throwing at them lately. Getting the puck out is one, our initial fore-check was decent, but the puck shifts somewhere and we don’t have guys going as hard as they should be to retrieve it,” said Brown.
The win was a collective group effort as everyone played well in the game.
Brown wants to emphasize to his players, though, to have more of a consistent 60-minute effort.
“We’ve been battling that, just can’t get a full 60 minutes most nights, so we’re really driving the guys to show up from the drop of the puck,” said Brown.
The Warriors got offensive contributions from Jase Westgard who scored two goals, while Tarun Fizer, Tyler Cardamone, Majid Kaddoura, Tanner Boutin, Hassan Akl and Jared Farmer each had one a piece.
On Oct. 18 in Lethbridge, the Warriors lost 4-1 and Fizer got the lone goal.
The local bantam team will play two home games next weekend on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in Hussar and Oct. 26 versus Cranbrook (2:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Braves dominated both of their games this past weekend as they beat Airdrie 11-1 and Red Deer 12-2 in peewee double-A action. They will also play at home next weekend on Oct. 24 in Hussar versus the Badlands Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 26 vs. Bow Valley (1:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
In midget double-A action, the Wheatland Chiefs beat Taber 4-1 and Medicine Hat 6-1 on the road.
They will be at home as well next weekend when they play host to the NWCAA Bruins (4:45 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre on Oct. 25.
