Ten teams sent 160 of their young tyke hockey players to the Family Centre for Family Day on Feb. 17, for the annual Strathmore Storm Tyke Tournament. Two teams from Indus, two from Airdrie, one each from Brooks and High River, and four from Strathmore all played three exhibition games and were awarded hardware.
“Because they’re five or six-years-old, and it’s their first or second year in hockey, it was a lot,” Charla Flett said, the tournament’s coordinator. “It’s all about fun. It’s just totally focused on giving these little guys a chance to play other opponents from other teams.”
Flett mentioned that events like this don’t happen without full volunteer support.
“We had a committee of 10 volunteer parents, then about 60 parent volunteers – from scorekeeping, to raffling, to selling 50/50 tickets. Of course then you add to that, every team has about four volunteer coaches,” she said.
Flett said that though the players were excited for hockey, they also enjoyed meeting mascots, getting temporary tattoos, and devouring the food – pancake breakfast and pizza lunches.
The UFA Bisons presented trophies to all tournament players following their games.
“It’s great to have those big guys here,” Flett said.
