Turning classics into zombies

Zombies have taken over many discussions over the past couple of years, and even a couple of classic books: Pride, Prejudice and Zombies anyone? Marigold Library Systems would like to see more books given the zombie makeover which is a reason behind the Halloween Art Contest running now until Oct. 29.
“The whole zombiefy thing has been really big in books lately it seems like. It was mostly inspired by the Pride, Prejudice and Zombies series of books, we just thought it was a cool idea and wanted to see more literary characters zombiefied,” said Jessie Bach, library services consultant with Marigold Library System.
The idea is for teens ages 12-18 to pick their favourite book, graphic novel or comic and zombiefy it. Participants can draw, paint or even sculpt and send a photo of their creation. Entries can be sent by e-mail and will need a scan or a photograph of the art. You can also drop off hardcopies of the art at any participating Marigold Library System member. All work must be original artwork, so it can’t be traced, or cut and pasted from a number of images.
“Mostly we’re just excited to see what everybody comes up with and get some pretty cool images that we can share on our website and teen newsletters as well. I think it’s a great opportunity for kids to show us some creative work, and I really like to hear about, you know how there’s that literary tie to it so I love hearing about peoples favourite books and then you give it this twist and that makes it a little more fun,” said Bach.
“I think it’s great to see that kind of variety because when we post them and tell people about them it might open them up to different genres they would like to try just from having a little exposure this way.”
To submit an entry, e-mail it to teens@marigold.ab.ca or drop it off at your local library. The winner will be notified by e-mail on Nov. 7. Full contest details can be found at www.teensbookingit.com.
