Finding something to do with your child during the summer is easier than ever, thanks to all of the summer camps being offered in and around Strathmore. The Youth Club of Strathmore begins their summer camps on June 30. Registration will take place throughout the summer, and will depend on if there is space available.
The camps begin with Who’s Your Hero, June 30 to July 4.
“Who’s Your Hero is kind of a run on the superhero idea in that it’s going to be superheroes as well as real life heroes,” said Shannon Zieman, program director for the Youth Club.
The fire department will have members coming in, as well as the armed forces reserves and other local heroes. The week will also incorporate the kids ideas on superheroes.
Week two, Prehistoria, July 7-11, is about prehistoric times. A couple of different field trip ideas are being discussed.
Circus Circus is week three, July 14-18.
“We actually have a circus troupe coming in on the Thursday that will teach some different skills right from stilt walking to tight ropes and juggling and clowning,” said Zieman.
Week four July 21-25 is Waterworks, and will be about anything and everything to do with water. The field trip for that week will either be to the Airdrie Genesis Place or to the Bassano outdoor pool, and will be weather dependent.
Wild, Wild West week, July 28 to Aug. 1, takes place in conjunction with the rodeo in town, and that week the kids don’t go on a field trip, but attend the rodeo.
Aug. 5-6 is Culture Crazy.
“Our whole intent behind that is to introduce the kids to different cultures, so it is not just specific to aboriginal culture. We have a couple of different ideas of different cultures we’re going to bring in to do activities and dances,” said Zieman.
Part of the week will also include having the kids identify their own cultural background and taking part in activities around that as well.
Aug. 11-17 is Survivor week. There will be different challenges and survivor quests set up, but the field trip has not yet been determined.
Lastly, week eight is Spirit Week, which is when the kids and coordinators get to go through the last seven weeks, pick out the popular stuff and redo it.
“It is just kind of a celebration week being as it is the last week of camp,” said Zieman.
The basic idea behind each week is that on Mondays, weather permitting, there will be a trip to the waterpark in the afternoon. Tuesdays will be things at the club in the morning and Jumphouse in the afternoon. Wednesday afternoon is a trip to the Aquatic Centre, Thursday is field trip day and Fridays are community service days, where the kids will do a community service project of some sort.
New this year, is the summer camps are also going to be offered in Rockyford and Carseland. The camps will be the same as the ones running in town, and the groups will come together for a couple of events.
Summer camps in Rockyford and Carseland will alternate weeks, starting with Carseland June 30 to July 4. Weeks six and seven will be back-to-back in Rockyford, and the final week will wrap up in Carseland.
Zieman said the club would also like to offer Youth Excursions for kids in Grade 7 and up. It would be a once a week trip to go hiking, or to Calaway Park. Youth Excursions can only happen if there is interest in it, and Zieman said she would like a list of at least 10 kids that they could contact to attend excursions.
Day camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, to register or for more information, contact the club at 403-934-4918. Costs range from $80-$100 for members, and $100-$120 for non-members.
