Seniors week is coming up, June 2-8, and this year there are all sorts of activities being planned.
“FCSS in conjunction with several other organizations have put together quite a fun filled week, so if you’re a senior you’ll be very lucky to be living in Strathmore for the week of June 2 through 8,” said Dahrlyne Knaus with Strathmore FCSS.
“Seniors are very important to our community and they make a difference in our community every day. This is just one way of acknowledging their contribution and to show how much they are appreciated,” said FCSS Coordinator Catherine Walsh.
“Strathmore FCSS has partnered with other community groups so we can collectively provide a fun filled week for all seniors. Seniors’ Week “Senior’s Rock” 2014 takes place June 2–8. Our hope is that the more activities we can provide, the more we will be able to engage all seniors.”
Walsh said it is a provincial initiative and the provincial launch event for Seniors Week will be on Monday, June 2, at the Westend Seniors Activity Centre in Edmonton.
In Strathmore the fun starts on Monday, June 2 at the Strathmore Municipal Library with ‘Getting Crafty with my Grandparent’ from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The craft will be making decorative vases, and all of the materials will be provided.
Tuesday, June 3 promises to be a full day of events. First up, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., there will be a Rockin’ Pancake Breakfast in front of the Lambert Centre. Local talent Dallas Larsen will be crooning to the attendees, while the fire department and FCSS flip flapjacks.
After breakfast at the Lord of All Lutheran Church is ‘Lunch and Barbeque Tips’, sponsored by the Growing Families Society. The cost is voluntary, and will be applied to food costs. To register call Marg at 403-901-7811.
Following lunch seniors are invited to head back to the Lambert Centre and to the Happy Gang 50+ Seniors Club for an afternoon social. The cost is $2, and there will be plenty of coffee and socializing for everyone.
June 4 will be a relaxing sort of day. From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. head over to the Aquatic Centre for a free swim with your grandkids.
June 5 in the FCSS boardroom there will be an information session, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., talking about reducing fall risks, learning about Lifeline and more. At 1:30 p.m. that same day it’s back to the library for tea and a special showing of the movie ‘Saving Mr. Banks.’
June 6 is a crib tournament at the Happy Gang. It is $12 to play and to register call Dorothy Hood at 403-983-1226.
Last but not least the week will wrap up with a picnic in Kinsmen Park on June 8. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. seniors are encouraged to bring their family to the park to enjoy the Native Dancing show which will be put on by Siksika Dancers and Drummers.
This is the first year senior’s week has had so many events to attend. Catherine Walsh, FCSS coordinator, said that next year they hope to partner with even more community groups and offer more activities.
