Parade at risk

The annual Santa Claus parade, which is scheduled for Nov. 29, is facing the possibility of cancellation if more people don’t sign up to participate.
“We only have a handful of entries and we would like enough so we don’t have to cancel the parade,” said Tracey Rogers with Aztec Real Estate.
The parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. and runs through downtown, has been a popular event for many years, but with numbers dwindling it’s getting harder to keep the family event running.
Anyone with a float, mascots, horses, or even a marching band is being asked to contact Rogers about entering the parade.
“It doesn’t have to be a big float, just a business or individual(s) who want to take part and get involved in the community and get into the Christmas spirit.”
There is no entry fee, and there are a few rules participants must follow: no candy or treats can be thrown from a float or vehicles; walkers along the sidewalks, however, can toss out candy and treats. Walkers must also be wearing clothing that illuminates, for safety reasons.
Parade entries must not use a Santa Claus unless arranged on the last float; all drivers must have an appropriate and valid drivers’ license; and no air horns or sirens can be used. The use of music and lights on floats is encouraged.
Application forms can be found by contacting Tracey Rogers at 403-934-5533, or by e-mail (aztecrealestate@nucleus.com).
Registration deadline is Nov. 22. If enough people have not signed up by then, the parade will be cancelled.
