‘Over the Moon’, a new act formed by Craig Bignell and Suzanne Levesque, will be coming to Kim’s Café on Dec. 5 for the Christmas Special show, thanks to the Strathmore Musical Arts Society.
Bignell and Levesque have both been a part of the music industry for a number of years, playing mostly as backup musicians. Bignell, who’s originally from Ontario, had been hired to play drums for the last Travelling Mabels CD, and when he came out for the release party he met Levesque, who is one of the Mabels. The pair are now married and working on their duo act, ‘Over the Moon.’
“When Suzanne and I met, I play guitar and banjo, and so when we met we started playing some songs and singing together and it was so much fun so we thought, let’s just do this ourselves finally, so that’s what we’re doing,” said Bignell.
Their style of musics hard to define, said Bignell, it has acoustic roots, but there are some blues songs, bluegrass, country, and just a wide mix.
“We’re having fun, if we want to try a different song with a different instrument that neither of us play, then we just go get one and start learning that instrument just to have a different flavour,” said Bignell.
Being in the forefront is something that is new for the pair.
“For me, when I’m going to drum, I’m totally not nervous, it’s just going to work for me, that’s what I do, but with this little duo and we’re in the front now and we have to talk to the audience, it’s nerve-wracking, it’s unreal how scary it is for us, we’re both really shy,” said Bignell.
The show will consist of some original music and some covers. Some of the covers will be obscure songs they have heard from different bands along their travels, but they will also play some well-known stuff, adapting it to fit their style.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by either going to Kim’s Café, or by contacting Linda Storkson at 403-680-7721. Kim will have hors d’oeuvres and Christmas goodies to purchase. There are approximately 20 tickets left, and they are expected to sell fast.
