Older teams suffer, younger teams sprout

With numbers already larger than last year for Strathmore Minor Soccer’s U4, U6, and U8 teams, President Mark Shorhen had hoped the same pattern would carry over for his older age groups.
“For the most part, the younger kids are doing well. The older ones, we’re still having issues to get them to sign up. I don’t know what exactly it is,” Shorhen said. “We probably won’t have a U16 team this year, unless something comes out of the woodwork.”
The deadline to register is March 28.
“It’s just so frustrating because I know the high school team has two or three times of what they need for a soccer team every year,” Shorhen said.
This season, Strathmore will have at least two girls squads: U10 and U16. Shorhen is still working on a girls U12.
Another good turnout was at Strathmore Minor Soccer’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 23. A few hundred kids enjoyed themselves at the wind-up party, while numbers tripled, Shorhen said, at the AGM. Five new board members were appointed, including a new secretary and treasurer.
“We discussed basically what we wanted to go forward with,” Shorhen said.
Some of those issues included registration numbers, talks with the Ag Society regarding a potential indoor facility, and discussing with Councilor Bob Sobol to ensure Strathmore Soccer stays in town.
