Strathmore’s Sarah Lecavalier will be going through the same format of tryouts she did last year for Team Alberta’s U18 women’s team. The 16-year-old will be attending the invite-only Top 80 camp from May 8-11 in Spruce Grove.
Team Alberta evaluates the entire province all year; Lecavalier stood out with her season on the Highwood Raiders of the AMMFHL; though she only had 17 points in 24 season games, Lecavalier was fifth in league playoff scoring with 15 points in 12 post-season matchups.
“I’m just trying to show them all of my assets – my speed, strength, and shot,” Lecavalier said. “Multiple coaches of Team Alberta have told me, just keep shooting, and get as many shots off as you can.”
Some of the other Top 80 girls may have played with Lecavalier during November 2013’s U18 National Championships. Lecavalier had one goal in the tournament.
“Now that I’m a second year, I think I know what I’m expected to do. I also know the level of hockey that’s going to be played,” she said. “I learned a lot at the camps I was at last year; they really preached driving the net. I have to focus on what they’ve been telling me from last year, because not much is going to change.”
Should Lecavalier be successful in Spruce Grove, the next step is Top 46 camp from July 8-13 in Camrose.
Following that, Top 27 will be named in September, with final cuts soon after. That team will compete in the 2015 Canada Winter Games from Feb. 14-20 in Prince George, British Columbia against other provinces.
“I feel good, I’m excited. Hopefully it’ll be my first full camp,” Lecavalier said; she hurt her kidney last year, missing the majority of tryouts, but still made the team. “I want to leave a good impression this time.”
