The Strathmore High School Spartans finished with 136 points overall at last year’s track and field zones. With many returners, coaches Paul Sonsteby, Kyle Larson, and Dan MacDonald are hoping for a similar finish.
“We had a better year last year for sure, and we sent a lot of kids to provincials,” Larson said, the relay coach. “The ones that we’ve had out are the core group we had at provincials last year. It’s good to have them back.”
Larson will be working on the 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay, while Dan MacDonald works with the 100m, 200m, and 400m sprinters.
“We’re hopeful again,” Sonsteby said, who also coaches cross country. “A lot of my kids from cross country have shown up for the distance events, and we won our zone in cross country, so I’d like to think we’d have some strong finishes, but it’s a completely different sport.”
Some long distance runners of the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m are also on the sprint team as well. Similar to last season, approximately 20 students will be participating – including Grade 10 Maria Fanning, who went to provincials for cross country. She will be running all three distance events.
“We’ve got some potential in the 10’s, that’s for sure,” Sonsteby said.
The group will be practicing twice a week to repeat or improve their seventh overall placing at zones last year.
Strathmore High School will host counties on May 21, and travel to Calgary for zones on May 27.
