Eureka!

The summer reading program Eureka! at the Strathmore Municipal Library runs from July 7 to Aug. 22, and coordinators Rynnelle Wiebe and Krystal Easu are excited to get the ball rolling. The girls are so excited, in fact, that they are inviting people to come out July 2-4 for extra activities outside of the actual program.
“Before the program even starts we have three events, they are (July) 2, 3 and 4. The 2nd is just a day for summer reading program participants to come in and help us decorate,” said Easu.
The plan is to make a mural for the meeting room, and get things ready for the following week. July 3 there will be a Mad Hatter Iced Tea party.
“We’re enjoying Alice in Wonderlands ridiculous, creative, non sensical world and creating a kick-off party,” said Easu.
“On the Friday we’re going to be doing something that I’m really excited about, we’re going to be trying to breaking the world record of the most hand puppets saying I love the library,” said Wiebe.
The current record is 34. Wiebe said they are asking people to meet in the library, bring a sock to make into sock puppets; and from there they will go into the kids section and make a video of the record-breaking statement.
The girls had been looking for something really cool to bring people in to the library to get them excited about the summer reading program and the summer. They were looking at what kind of world records they could do with libraries and that’s when they found this one.
Easu is returning this year after helping with last year’s summer reading program.
“It is a great job, it is such an awesome opportunity to come in and hang with kids, I love hanging out with kids, and trying to come up with something that might inspire them,” said Easu.
Wiebe is looking for the experience that coordinating the program will provide her with.
“It’s a really good learning experience and hopefully will be a lot of fun, I’m looking forward to the program actually starting,” said Wiebe.
The summer will be filled with all sorts of creative activities for the kids.
“The theme Eureka! is kind of all about creativity and discovery and learning, so we are going to try and do science experiments and recycling, lots of crafts, trying to get the kids creative and do some fun learning so it is not just the same as school,” said Wiebe.
One day will be all about recycling, taking cardboard boxes, tin cans and so forth and see what they can make with them, and how many things that can be made out of the items.
Wiebe and Easu would like to get teenagers to come out, but said it is a little had to reach that demographic.
“We’re kind of trying to find things that we ourselves would think is really cool, and we would want to make it ourselves,” said Wiebe.
There is a $5 fee for the program, for more information go to http://www.strathmorelibrary.ca/srp.
